Every Friday we look into our Basque archives for interesting historic events that happened on the same day

On May 15, 1884, the general board of stockholders of the Durango-Zumarraga Railroad Company held a meeting in the city of Bilbao, Bizkaia. In this meeting, it was voted unanimously to form and approve the statutes of the so-called “Durango and Zumarraga Railroad Company.” Furthermore, it was decided to construct an electric freight railroad between Durango (Bizkaia) and Zumarraga (Gipuzkoa), passing through places like Ermua, Eibar, Bergara, and Antzuola. The main intention of the construction of this railroad route was to connect important Basque industrial centers with major markets.
